Civilization... was coming.
Try as one might... to blame colonization for our modern ills...
It was coming to the world... fully matured or not.

The clash between advanced societies...
meaning... parts of the world that had developed domestic cultures...
and behaviors... and skills... and an orderly reckoning with life...
farming... ranching... building... travel... cleanliness... food preparation...
tools... clothing... employment and business... medical care... child rearing...
and...
the clash with a world still struggling with cannibalism... and hedenism.

Even today there are stories of primitive behaviors and beliefs.
In World War II, our troops confronted cannibals and headhunters
along the Phillipine Islands and elsewhere...
and Africa was a continent of tribal rivalries...
with only a few with standards of cleanliness and mannerly behaviors.

I hear stories of South America...
where... up in the hills cultures are quite primitive.
People poop off the ledge of a hill nearby...
and... if a daughter hadn't lost her virginity by age 13
the father would do the honors himself
to remove the daughter's shame.

In Alaska, when girls came to the city from their isolated villages
they had no idea how to tend to their menstrual routines...
in a modern bathroom with running water.

... and yet... this gives mankind a great opportunity...
to see where we all came from...
where we surely once emerged from...
to now live healthfully and peacefully amongst each other.

The indigenous tribes of North America were relatively cultured.
They practiced a system of honor... and courage...
They lived in harmony with... and respected... the natural world.
They may not have built cities and great civilizations...
but they kept an honorable order amongst each other.

Perhaps in one more generation of mankind...
the primitives will have learned to adapt to modern ways...
and all memory of filth and ignorance will disappear...
and we need to have what they know...
what was preserved in those jungles.
We need their folklore... their history... their plant wisdom... their medicines.
It is a priceless heritage given to our modern world...
a reminder of our own history.
We might have lost it.
We need to see for ourselves... just how far mankind has come.

We can't have millions of people who remain barbarians.
The world is too easily traveled now... and we are mixing too quickly...
and they bring their primitive ways with them when they come...
and they live as strangers among us... with their tin horned ways.
They bring their growing pains with them.
And yet... the burden has been on us... to adapt... to THEM.

Education without a moral compass... creates monsters.
We can teach values in our schools without calling upon God in prayer.
After all... who gets to write those prayers?... and form those sacred words?
Which version of prayer shall it be?... or do we rotate?...
No. Those prayers are said at home... and at church...
and said in humble privacy... and not imposed on others.
Church bells do not impose on anyone's beliefs...
but a call to prayer over a loudspeaker... is oppressive... and aggressive.
Surely they can see that this isn't compatible with our culture.

In our schools...
We can teach mannerly and honorable behavior common to all of us.
We can teach respect for each other without a big "to-do" about it.
We can promote a moral life of good choices and stable lifestyles.
We can teach dignity and personal skills...
that serve us all well in our interactions with each other.

The jungle has shown up on our doorsteps.

We need to help people emerge from their jungles... in their own homes and countries...
with clean water... food cultivation... education... medical care...
to give their advancing populations a foothold on civility and order...
so that they build their homes where their own history lies...
and work to build a good life for themselves and their families...
not take from the fruits of OUR struggles... from OUR trees...
and push us aside like we have no choice but to submit.

Let them take what they've learned back to their home countries
and do the hard work of building their own version of the world.

Since 1970 at least... the influx of spanish speaking people into the United States
has been so unwieldy... that we've had to change our culture to accommodate them.
To get a job in the government one had to be bilingual... spanish/english...
which surely gave an edge to spanish-speaking people in all of government.

The damage done when we accommodate these people is extensive.

The problem is... these are likely illegal persons getting benefits.
They can't function in an english-speaking country.
They can't read road signs.
They can't understand police commands or emergency commands.
They can easily misunderstand something in a conversation
and become panicky and fearful... and eventually violent.
They use water and resources that are designed and planned for... for actual citizens.
They take up housing... putting a heavy strain on working people to find a home.

In recent years I've seen them...
women hanging around in stores with a couple of little children...
speaking spanish shamelessly... sometimes angrily to children...
and when you stop to say "what a charming little girl"...
the mother figure... asks if you will pay for their groceries.
Pulls at your heartstrings... doesn't it.

And then this... happened.
It went too far.

I was checking out some purchases at a store...
putting my things on to the belt of the countertop...
bending over into my cart...
and my butt got bumped by a young girl of 12 years old... or so...
our butts bumped each other.
She had stepped in front of her own cart and was bending into it.
I asked the girls mother to move back a bit until I finished putting my things up.
Again I bent over... and again my butt got bumped by this girl.
Then the cashier advanced the belt on the counter before I was finished...
pushing the girl's purchases forward into my things.
The cashier said she wouldn't get them mixed up.

I felt assaulted now.
It felt quite intrusive on my body...
and I didn't like the feel of her butt against MY butt.
I said to the mother, "do you even know what butt means?
Do you not speak english?
do you even understand it when I say "BUTT...?"
She just looked at me with a blank expression...
like she didn't care one bit whether she understood or not.
She never asked the girl to move her cart back a ways.

so I said...
"If you can come to this country and learn our culture...
then you can go back to your own country and learn THEIR culture."
... or her kids... if they even are her REAL kids...
can go to their home country and start over THERE...
even if those kids had never been to "the old country"...
if they can come up here... and learn our ways...
they can go home... and learn THOSE ways.

I'm done. I no longer care about their well-being.

I was so sickened by this little drama I'd been pushed into
that I resolved to give up anything Mexican... including tacos.
I didn't want to contribute to this aggression in any way or form.
I'd had to live a long time competing with illegals for jobs... and for housing...
and now I was just done.

I no longer feel like saying "excuse me"... to someone who can't speak english.
I no longer feel like standing aside to give them room...
or attempt to have a conversation with them...
or eat food that they have touched...
or give them a dollar when they beg on the street.
I will keep silent... as if they weren't even there.

ET... go home.
